Ms. Deirdre L. Jurand, Esq.
Deirdre L. Jurand, Esq., NASA — Ms. Jurand is a policy analyst for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters, where she provides analysis, advice and guidance to manage program and policy issues with national and international impact. As the Science Committee Executive Secretary, she maintains information on the nature, functions, and operations of the Committee, acts as the Designated Federal Officer of each Committee meeting, approves the agendas, provides the opportunity for reasonable participation by the public in the Committee’s activities, and ensures that detailed and accurate minutes of the meetings are kept. Ms. Jurand also serves as the Science Mission Directorate point of contact for international agreements and responds to Congressional, public and internal inquiries regarding the Directorate's interagency reimbursable and Earth observing satellite programs, among other duties.
In addition to her work at NASA, Ms. Jurand has worked as an Attorney Advisor at the Department of Justice and as a program manager for the State Department's Bureau of Counterterrorism. She was a Presidential Management Fellow from 2010 through 2012, and before that attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where she was the Executive Editor of the law review. Her legal experience is broad, ranging from corporate in-house counsel to the district attorney's office to law firms to legal news services. Additionally, in the time since she graduated law school and passed the bar, Ms. Jurand has remained involved in the legal community by litigating and winning a multi-year pro bono case. She earned a BA from the University of Richmond in 2007 with majors in philosophy and journalism, has hundreds of published articles in multiple newspapers and news services, and has been cited numerous times in law review articles.
Ms. Jurand is very active outside of work, running in multiple races and fun runs with her boyfriend every year and participating in rotating sports teams. In her pursuit of trying new things regularly, she has gone paragliding, driven a stock car, traveled to Brazil, and flown an airplane, among other things.
