Aurora Gallery back to spaceweather.com |
| Summary: A coronal mass ejection (CME) swept past Earth on Nov. 20th and sparked bright auroras as far south as Florida in the United States and Greece in Europe. The source of the CME was sunspot 484--one of the trio of active regions that caused intense geomagnetic storms last month. See, e.g., the October 2003 aurora gallery. Page

A beautiful display of red and green aurora with first sighting during twilight (about 6:10 PM EST). The display continued for more than two hours. I kept moving east until I was literally standing in the Atlantic Ocean -- and I could still see the aurora, even with bright city lights! Listening to the crashing waves of the ocean while photographing this magnificent phenomena was something I'll never forget. This was an extrarodinary display; at one point I could see the auroras reflected in the sand of the beach! |

From when I went outside at 9pm until when I went to sleep at 4am the sky was never dark. I was amazed by the amount of aurora activity with vertical pillars stretching right over head. Colours ranged from rich bright pink to green to blue an pail green/grey. |

I was thrilled the aurora was still going on when darkness reached the central US on Nov. 20th. 28mm & 50mm lens at f/2.5, exposed for 15-20 secs on Fuji Superia 800. |

I received a call from the Spaceweather Phone and then watched anxiously as geomagnetic activity spiked throughout the afternoon. When I got home, I ran out back and sure enough... the northern lights were glowing faintly. I managed to snag this shot shortly after... probably around 7pm. This was taken using a Sony DSC-F717 digital camera set to ISO200 for 30 seconds. |

On clear nights at Nanjemoy Creek Environmental Education the Southern Maryland Astronomical Society teaches 5th graders about Astronomy. Tonight they were treated with vivid puffy green clouds and red streaks from sundown until about 9:30 pm EST mostly in the West and Southwestern sky. Cannon G2, 400ASA, 10s, F2 |

Pictures were taken with a old Sears SLR camera using Fuji 800 with a 10 sec exposure. This was one of the most beautiful auroras I have ever been able to witness... |

We took all these captures of beautiful auroral displays between 20.00 - 23.00 local time. The most surprising thing was that auroras appeared not only above norther horizon but above our heads and south-east horizon, too! In the begnning they formed white-blue "foggy-clouds", "sparkles" and "pillars". Then they turned to red and white ones (our Polish national colours hihi!) and formed a GIANT curtain above all northern sky! Then they faded just after 23.10 LT and the show was over... It was a breathtaking experience! I want some more! :-) All pics taken with Fuji FinePix S602Z digital camera at ISO 400/800 with 15s. |

As dusk began, most of the activity seemed to be in the east and northeast through steadily thickening cirrus clouds. When I turned around to go back home, I was shocked to see visual red hovering below Mars (see photo #2). |
