Ground-Based Gamma-Ray Astronomy

by

Valerie Connaughton
30 October 2001

Over the last decade, the ground-based gamma-ray community has migrated from the world of speculative particle astrophysics into that of mainstream observational astronomy. I will review the ground-based techniques and early frustrations, leading to breakthrough gamma-ray observations of the Crab Nebula. I will discuss the current state of the field and the synergy that must exist between the space-based and ground-based high-energy communities in the design and implementation of future observatories.
