Space Weather — A Junior High Perspective
Description of Middle School Student Science Fair Projects

Topics
1. Space Weather, The Sun - Earth Connection. Project involved working with
a MSFC scientist; building a soda bottle magnetometer to detect the
presence or absence of geomagnetic storms events, using the resources of
the Space Environment Center. Received first awards at the school science
fair, Regional and State Competition in Pennsylvania. Junior Academy of Science
and a plaque at Regional for the highest score in the physical science
category.
2. Measuring the Motion of a CME. Project involved working with a GSFC
researcher to independently use SOHO observations to calculate speeds of
shock fronts for CME's for purposes of predicting Earth impact of
geomagnetic storm events. Project received first awards at school science
fair, Regional and State Competition in Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science; also
at Regional, a plaque for the highest score in the physical science
category and a perfect 5.0 score.
