Modelling the Background Noise in Space Gamma-Ray Missions by Tony Dean 10 September 2001 Physics based Monte-Carlo methods have been developed to model the background noise in space missions with great accuracy. The technique has been applied to a number of past, present, and future missions: BATSE-CGRO, INTEGRAL, Swift, TGRS. The technique has applications at all phases of the project, from the initial design phases, through calibration and so on to the final data processing phases. The methods and applications are described with particular reference to the "flat fielding" of gamma-ray astronomical data.
