MY NASA DATA: Forest Fires

This is a problem-based learning activity where students utilize NASA data to identify forested areas at high risk for wildfire. Students assume the role of rangers of the Department of Forestry and draw conclusions from the data in order to attempt to prevent forest fires.

Discoveries at Willow Creek

In this science-based storybook, students learn about making observations, taking scientific measurements and recording their findings in a science journal. Simon, Anita and Dennis join Hannah, a local scientist, as they compare spring and fall observations of changes they see at Willow Creek.

Simple Machines

Learners will gain an understanding of simple machines and how they may be used in our everyday lives. Students will also have an opportunity to design a Rube Goldberg Machine of their own. This is lesson 10 of 16 in the MarsBots robotics learning module.

MY NASA DATA: Basic Line Plots

In this data analysis activity, students interpret basic line plots of wind speed using authentic NASA data. The lesson provides detailed procedures, related links and sample graphs, follow-up questions, extensions, and teacher notes.

Open Clusters versus Globular Clusters

In this activity, students will describe similarities and differences between galactic star clusters and globular clusters.

Ring Plane Crossing

This is an activity about crossing the rings of Saturn. Learners will watch a computer-generated animation sequence that shows several Saturn ring plane crossings. The students note the time of each crossing, and calculate the time interval between crossings.

Compass Needles around a Simple Circuit

This is an activity about electromagnetism. Learners will set up a simple circuit using a battery, wire, and knife switch, and then use a compass to map the magnetic field lines surrounding the wire. Next, they will add a coil of wire to the simple circuit and map the magnetic fields again.

This module include four problem-based learning scenarios related to volcanoes and emphasize different kinds of volcanic hazards and geologic processes. The four scenarios are: whether to build a new high school in the shadow of a restless volcanic giant, Mt.

Planetary Nebula NGC 2440 Lithograph

The lithograph contains a Hubble Space Telescope image that shows the colorful Planetary Nebula NGC 2440 with one of the hottest known white dwarf stars at its center. The text briefly explains the process of stellar death of sun-like stars and those with a mass greater than eight times the Sun.

Roping the Wave

In this kinesthetic activity, students observe the relationship between energy and the frequency of waves transmitted through a rope. A rope and a slinky are used in this activity.
