How Big is the Sun? Exploring the Size and Scale of the Sun, Earth and Moon

This is an activity about the size and scale of the Sun, Earth and Moon. Learners will collectively paint and label a model of the Sun and determine the comparative sizes of these three bodies.

Science Bulletins

This website presents ongoing research and recent discoveries in astrophysics, Earth science, and biodiversity. Each bulletin has three types of stories: documentaries (short videos from the field), data visualizations (based on NASA and NOAA data), and news snapshots.

Crater Creations: Moon

Learners will experiment to create impact craters and examine the associated features. Then they observe images of lunar craters and explore how the mass, shape, velocity, and angle of impactors affects the size and shape of the crater. This activity is part of Explore! To the Moon and Beyond!

Sundials: Observing and Using Shadows

This is an activity about identifying patterns of change in shadows as an effect of the Sun's changing position. This activity also discusses how shadows can be used to determine the time of day. Learners will build sundials and collect data based on their observations.

Glacial-Interglacial Cycle

This online lab exercise focuses on the causes, characteristics and effects of the glacial-interglacial cycle.

Spectrogram Plots and Magnetic Storminess

This is an activity about using spectrogram plots as an indicator of magnetic activity on Earth. Learners will analyze spectrogram data and compare it to local Kp indices in an attempt to determine global magnetic storminess.

Drive-By Science: UV-sensitive Beads

In this activity, learners will experiment with ultraviolet light sensitive plastic beads, which are generally white but turn colors when exposed to UV light.

Using Radar to Search the Darkness

This is a lesson about using radar to search for water on the Moon. Learners will use images to search for water on the moon. Additionally they will learn how Mini-RF can identify surface features that are permanently shadowed, or lack any visible evidence of surface morphology.

Sampling the Sun: What are We Made of? The Sun, the Earth, and You

This is a lesson about elemental abundance in solar wind. Learners will count elements extracted from a simulated sample and learn how the extraction of atoms from the Genesis samples help scientists have a better understanding of the abundances of elements from the solar wind.

Water in the Geosphere

In this activity, participants learn about the geosphere by making observations and taking measurements. They will go outside and use scientific equipment to investigate water in the soil by measuring soil moisture, temperature, color and consistency.
