Aster's Hoity Toity Belt

This is an annotated children's story about the Dawn mission to Vesta and Ceres in the asteroid belt. Learners will dissect the story for real and fictional objects and places in the solar system, and for those scientific concepts or processes that may be true.

Plate Tectonics and Volcanism

This is a lesson where learners explore plate movement and the relationship between plate tectonics and volcanoes. The lesson models scientific inquiry using the 5E instructional model and includes teacher notes, prerequisite concepts, common misconceptions, student journal and reading.

MRC: Final Design (Grades 3-5)

In this lesson, students will design a planetary surface rover to conduct a planetary surface investigation. It uses the 5E learning cycle and is designed around an essential question: How will creating a prototype of your rover help you prepare for the Mars Rover Celebration?

Future Moon: The Footsteps of Explorers

Learners model how impacts throughout the Moon's history have broken rocks down into a mixture of dust, rocks, and boulders that covers the lunar surface.

Solar Wind Variation Throughout the Heliosphere

In this lab activity, students use simulation results and data available through the NASA Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) to explore the structure of the solar wind, its variation through the heliosphere.

Microbial Life - Educational Resources

This site contains a variety of educational and supporting materials related to microbiology.

The Coordinate Plane

This is a set of one-page problems about how astronomers use coordinate systems. Learners will plot a constellation on a coordinate plane and/or plot the route of Mars Science Lab (MSL aka Curiosity) on the surface of Mars.

Creativity in Science

This lesson examines the different roles scientists play in discoveries. Students will research various satellites and their uses.

Giving Presentations in Middle Schools: Best Practices

This resource identifies best practices for giving presentations or talks in middle school classrooms and was developed to help scientists and engineers who have been asked to visit a middle school classroom.

Mars Math

This book contains 24 illustrated math problem sets based on a weekly series of space science problems. Each set of problems is contained on one page. The problems were created to be authentic glimpses of modern science and engineering issues, often involving actual research data.
