Proportional Relationships

Students use simple proportions and fractions to explore the number of stars in the Milky Way, and the relative sizes of some famous stars compared to our own Sun.

Earth Matters

Students are introduced to classification through progressive activities. Initially, the teacher models the task by classifying buttons. Students then devise a classification scheme for paper clips. Subsequent activities use objects brought from home or the playground by students.

Water in the Atmosphere

In this activity, participants learn about the atmosphere by making observations and taking measurements. They will go outside and use scientific equipment to collect atmospheric moisture data (temperature, relative humidity, precipitation and cloud cover).

Post-Assessment: Student Illustrations and Writing About the Sun

This is an activity to reinforce concepts learned about the Sun, the Sun, Earth, and Moon system and eclipses. Learners will communally discuss their knowledge of these concepts briefly, and will then complete a series of worksheets and writings to demonstrate grasp of content.

Investigating the Ring Current

Students use a dipole magnet and compass to model and map Earth's magnetic field. They then induce a magnetic field to represent a Ring Current in order to observe the response to a fluctuating electric current caused by a solar storm.

This is a NASA special publication about the Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn, that was published in 1997 and reflects the facts and theories as known prior to mission arrival. Learners can read about what was involved in sending this large spacecraft to the outer solar system.

This inquiry activity supports student understanding of the cause of light, heat and shadow, how to measure the passage of time, and how to use rules and other measuring tools. Students make observations using shadows, a meter stick, and a homemade sundial.
