Can you Show that the Temperature of Air has an Effect on its Weight and its Direction of Vertical Movement?

This activity has two purposes: challenge the learner to develop a procedure for investigating a research question and to learn more about factors affecting the dynamics of air in motion.

Science and Engineering Conference

This is an activity about how to measure the interplanetary magnetic field, or IMF. Learners will act as scientists and engineers at a conference to explain their discoveries from earlier activities of the larger resource where they designed their own ways to measure the IMF.

Spot Plots

This is an activity about measurement. Learners will label key points and features on a rectangular equal-area map and measure the distance between pairs of points in order to calculate the actual physical distance on the Sun that the point pairs represent.

Solar Observations

This is an activity involving observations of the Sun. Learners use pinhole cameras, solar telescopes, and/or solar viewing glasses to make solar observations, draw what they see, and identify sunspots, if they are present.

The Crawl of the Crab

In this activity, students compare two images of the Crab Nebula taken more than 40 years apart. By measuring the motion of some of the knots of glowing gas in the neubla, students will be able to determine the date of the supernova explosion that set the Crab Nebula into motion.

MRC: Selecting Teams Rover Mission (Grades 6-8)

Learners will review what they have learned about scientific and engineering investigation, construct a valid scientific question that can be answered by data and/or modeling, and choose an appropriate mission for their rover that will answer their scientific question.

Epo's Chronicles

Epo's Chronicles is a web comic series which takes place in the distant future. It is about a sentient spaceship called Epo, and its humanoid companion, Alkina, who explore the universe and try to discover their origins. The series is available in English, Spanish, French and Italian.

GLOBE Earth System Science Posters and Learning Activities

These two posters represent visual data collected from satellites, ground based observations, and model predictions representing solar energy, average temperature, cloud cover, precipitation, soil moisture and vegetation over 12 month periods in 1987 and 2007.

Exploring Relationships Between Two Variables

In this activity, student teams explore the connections between parts of the Earth system by examining a time series of environmental data maps.

GPM Technology and Instrumentation: LEGO Model

This site features information about constructing a LEGO model of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Mission Core Observatory.
