First Step: Return to the Moon!

This kick-off activity sets the stage for further explorations and activities in Explore! To the Moon and Beyond! - a resource developed specifically for use in libraries. As a group, learners will discuss what they know about Earth's Moon.

Edible Mars Spacecraft

Learners will become familiar with the vehicles of two Mars missions: Mars Global Surveyor, Mars Pathfinder and the rover Sojourner (note: the activity could be easily adapted to be based on more current Mars missions and spacecraft).

Seeing Interference Fringes

In this demonstration, students detect the interference of waves and measure wave phenomena using an experimental apparatus consisting of a laser pointer, a second surface mirror scrap (like a bathroom mirror) binder clips, razor blade, ruler, and a white wall or projection screen.

Regolith Formation

This is an activity about the formation of regolith, the loose fragmental material on the Moon's surface. Learners will engage in a series of hands-on activities comparing and contrasting regolith formation processes on the Moon and on Earth.

Soil Chapter - From Mudpies to Bricks

In this laboratory activity, students are introduced to the different particle sizes of soil and their properties. Using sieves, students remove organic materials and pebbles, and separate sand, silt, and clay.

Mars Meteorites "Fingerprints"

This activity is about the use of spectral data to identify mineral composition on Mars. Working in teams, students will compare and contrast spectra to identify similarities between Earth minerals and those from Mars.

All Year Long

In this activity, each student will keep a science journal during each of the four seasons. Students will record observations of the general outdoor environment they visit and then will make observations of one specific item from the habitat in each season.

Distance from the Center of the Sun's Disk

This is an activity about determining the distance of a solar flare from the center of the Sun's disk. Learners will use transparency grids overlaid on images of the Sun in order to calculate the distance of a solar flare, similar to a signal detection method used by scientists.

This book presents 49 space-related math problems published weekly on the SpaceMath@NASA site during the 2011-2012 academic year.

Observing Convection Currents

This model demonstrates convection currents and uses water, food coloring, a cup of very hot water and a votive candle as heat sources. Movie clips of demonstration setup and convection in action are provided.
