Coloring the Universe (with Pencil Code)

Students participate in a series of activities to discover how astronomers use computers to create images and understand data.

Back to the Future

Students will compare aerial photos of their area from the past with current photos, noting differences and then conducting ground truth investigations to determine what happened.

Student Illustrations and Writing About the Sun

This is an activity used to identify students' initial ideas and potential scientific misconceptions about the Sun. Learners will draw and label the Sun and write a supplemental paragraph containing what they know about the Sun.

Diameter of the Moon

Learners will calculate the diameter of the Moon using proportions. This activity is in Unit 1 of the Exploring the Moon teachers guide, which is designed for use especially, but not exclusively, with the Lunar Sample Disk program.

Measuring Solar Rotation - Solar Latitude/Longitude Method

This is an activity about the period of the Sun's rotation. Learners will use image of the Sun from the SOHO spacecraft and a transparent latitude/ longitude grid called a Stonyhurst Disk to track the motion of sunspots in terms of degrees of longitude.

Stratospheric Ozone and Ultraviolet Light

This is a lesson where learners explore how the creation and destruction of ozone protects us from ultraviolet radiation (UV).

Jump to Jupiter

This is a lesson about the size and scale of the planets in the solar system. Learners will help create and then navigate an outdoor course of the traditional planets (including dwarf planet Pluto), which are represented by small common objects.

What Color is the Ocean? Simple Spectrophotometer Activity

Learners will use an inexpensive, simple spectrophotometer to test how light at different visible wavelengths (blue, green, red) is transmitted, or absorbed, through four different colored water samples.

This is an engineering design challenge activity. Learners will use balloons to investigate how a multi-stage rocket, like that used to launch the Interstellar Boundary Explorer, or IBEX, spacecraft, can propel a satellite to a specific orbit.
