Build a Simple Sextant

In this activity, learners build a sextant to measure the altitude, or height above the horizon, of an object. The activity was originally designed to accompany a previous NASA-funded educational program, entitled The Sun in Time.

Seeing as Far as You Can See

In this activity, students become familiar with using binoculars and/or a telescope. They locate and identify constellations, and the Andromeda Galaxy. This is a night-time activity that is designed to be done in the fall, when the Andromeda Galaxy is most easily visible in the early evening.

Lunar Land Use

Learners will design a development on the Moon that is suitable, feasible, and beneficial and present proposals for developments on the Moon in a competition for approval from a student-staffed Lunar Council.

Comparing Cosmic Cameras

How Can the Little Moon Hide the Giant Sun? Exploring Size and Distance

This is an activity exploring the concept that distance affects how we perceive an object's size, specifically pertaining to the size of the Sun and the Moon as seen from Earth. Learners will complete a hands on activity where two balls of differing sizes stand in for the Sun and the Moon.

Chesapeake Bay: Resource Use or Abuse?

The use or abuse of the Chesapeake Bay is examined and discussed in the form of a student role-playing activity. Each student gathers relevant background information and formulates questions from briefing cards included in the investigation.

SDO Project Suite Module 1: What are the Features of the Sun?

This is the first module in the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO) Project Suite curriculum. Activities are self-directed by students or student teams using online videos and data from the SDO satellite to explore, research and build knowledge about features of the Sun.
