This artist’s concept depicts one of the two identical PREFIRE CubeSats orbiting Earth. NASA has extended the mission through September 2026 and expanded its scope, shifting focus from Earth’s polar regions to the entire planet.

PREFIRE (Polar Radiant Energy in the Far-InfraRed Experiment) measures a little-studied portion of the radiant energy emitted by Earth for clues about sea ice loss, ice-sheet melting, and a warming Arctic.
