ROSES 2011 Clarifications, corrections and amendments Clarification of Appendix A.28 Interdisciplinary Research in Earth Science

Description: A paragraph has been added to Appendix A.28, Interdisciplinary Research in Earth Science to Clarify the requirement that data used must be public.

Appendix A.28 Interdisciplinary Research in Earth Science already contained a requirement that “Studies must make use of data from satellite instruments and/or publicly available aircraft data...” but the following paragraph has been added to the end of Section 1 to clarify this requirement. The new paragraph reads:

Studies must make use of data from satellite instruments and/or publicly available aircraft data; proposals that do not use such data will be considered as not responsive and thus not given consideration as part of this element. Proposals may, but are not required to, allow for additional collection of data that will be used as part of the investigation. This could involve aircraft flights, satellite observations that require tasking and which would not be made in the absence of such tasking, and/or other data sources. If any such new data are to be acquired as part of the investigation, the proposers must document how and when those data will be made generally available to the user community, following NASA's data policy which requires sharing data at the earliest possible opportunity with no period of exclusive access for the investigator. The costs, if any, of obtaining those data must be included as part of the proposal and the proposal must include clear statements about any issues that might affect the collection and/or availability of such data. [Clarified on September 7, 2011]
