ROSES 2012 Clarifications, corrections and amendments Appendixes C.16 (was PIDD now PICASSO) and C.20 (ASTEP) will not be solicited in ROSES 2012

Description: Appendix C.20, the Astrobiology Science and Technology for Exploring Planets (ASTEP) program will not be solicited in ROSES 2012. Appendix C.16, which was released as the Planetary Instrument Definition and Development Program (PIDDP) will not be solicited in ROSES 2012. However, we anticipate that Appendix C.16 will be solicited in ROSES 2013 as the Planetary Instrument Concepts for the Advancement of Solar System Observations (PICASSO) Program and draft text is presented in Appendix C.16 of ROSES 2012.

Although Appendix C.16, which was released as the Planetary Instrument Definition and Development Program (PIDDP), will not be solicited in ROSES 2012, we anticipate that Appendix C.16 will be solicited in ROSES 2013 as the Planetary Instrument Concepts for the Advancement of Solar System Observations (PICASSO) Program and draft text is presented in Appendix C.16 of ROSES 2012.

The Planetary Instrument Concepts for the Advancement of Solar System Observations (PICASSO) Program will support the development of spacecraft-based instrument systems that show promise for use in future planetary missions. The goal of the program is to conduct planetary and astrobiology science instrument feasibility studies, concept formation, proof of concept instruments, and advanced component technology development to the point where they may be proposed in response to Appendix C.19 the Maturation of Instruments for Solar System Exploration (MatISSE) Program and eventually into flight missions. As such, the technology readiness level (TRL) that PICASSO supports is 1-3. It is the responsibility of the proposer to justify the entry and exit level TRL of the proposed technology. This program will permit appropriate funding to be applied at this early stage to develop and demonstrate key and enabling new technologies for planetary science missions, such as instrument feasibility studies, concept formulation, proof of concept, laboratory demonstrations, and advanced component technology development.

We regret to inform potential proposers that Appendixes C.16 and C.20, which were presented as placeholders on release of ROSES 2012 in mid-February, will not be solicited in ROSES 2012. However, we anticipate that they will be solicited in ROSES 2013 and draft text for Appendix C.16 is presented in ROSES 2012 with the new name Planetary Instrument Concepts for the Advancement of Solar System Observations (PICASSO).
