Coverage Begins for Sentinel-6B Launch
Coverage is underway for launch of the Sentinel-6B spacecraft, the newest international sea level measurement satellite mission jointly developed by NASA, ESA (European Space Agency), EUMETSAT (the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with funding support from the European Commission and technical support from the French space agency CNES (Centre National d’Études Spatiales).
The spacecraft is scheduled to launch in less than 90 minutes at 12:21 a.m. EST Monday, Nov. 17 (9:21 p.m. PST Sunday, Nov. 16) aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 4 East at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
The satellite is designed to measure sea levels within about one inch across roughly 90% of the world’s oceans and will extend a continuous dataset to almost 40 years. Sentinel-6B will also extend the record of atmospheric temperatures begun by Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich out to a decade.
Live streaming launch coverage begins at 11:30 p.m. (8:30 p.m. PST) on NASA+, Amazon Prime, and the agency’s website and YouTube Channel.
Updates will be posted on NASA’s Sentinel-6B blog, along with several social media accounts.
