
Army Prototype Review
This U.S. Army photograph from 1958 shows an actual-size (80.75 inches) prototype of Explorer 1 being examined by project officers at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency in Huntsville, Alabama. The model shows the assembled satellite and the final stage rocket, which orbited together as a single unit. From left to right: (front) Eberhard Rees, Major General John B. Medaris, Wernher von Braun and Ernst Stuhlinger; (back) W. A. Mrazek, and Walter Haeussermann.
