
1966: First view of Earth from the moon (Lunar Orbiter 1)
The public’s first view of Earth from the moon was taken by the Lunar Orbiter 1, which was built by the Boeing Co. to survey smooth areas of the moon in preparation for Surveyor and Apollo landing sites. A total of five lunar orbiters eventually returned more than 3,000 images.
