1968: Earthrise (Apollo 8)

On Christmas Eve 1968, the crew of Apollo 8 held a live broadcast from lunar orbit, during which they showed photos of Earth and the Moon as seen from their spacecraft. “The vast loneliness is awe-inspiring, and it makes you realize just what you have back there on Earth,” said Command Module Pilot Jim Lovell.
