1972: The “Blue Marble” (Apollo 17)
This iconic and stunning view of Earth, now known as the “Blue Marble,” was taken by the crew of the last Apollo mission – Commander Eugene A. Cernan; Command Module Pilot Ronald E. Evans; and Lunar Module Pilot Harrison H. Schmitt. It was the first time an Apollo trajectory made it possible to photograph the South polar ice cap.
