An original model of Explorer 1, one of 20 made at the time, took center stage in the Great Hall of the National Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine during a celebration of the satellite's launch anniversary. The press conference announcing Explorer 1's successful orbit was held in the same location in 1958. The model was shared by the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum for the event.
