Dr. Kevin Czajkowski, PI on the GLOBE Mission Earth, presented virtually to more than 100 students from over 30 schools in Malta attending the 10th Annual Youth Summit on May 14 at 9:00 am (Malta time)/3:00 am EDT. Dr. C’s presentation on the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE) was part of the urbanism section of the summit. Two students from Gozo College and Maria Regina College presented on heat islands and green spaces. The students identified the problems and developed actions to address the problems. Their suggestions included planting trees, urban gardens and green roofs. The students’ reports will be given to the Prime Minister of Malta., Robert Abela.

As leader of the Urban Heat Island Effect-Surface Temperature Campaign for GLOBE, Dr. Czajkowski’s presentation focused on Urban Heat Island Effect which is happening in Malta. The population of Malta is growing rapidly leading to the construction of new buildings after Malta joined the European Union in 2003.

Nature Trust-FEE Malta organized the annual Young People’s Summit in preparation for the 15th Annual Young people’s Eco Schools Parliament which will occur in June. The summit discussed themes raised by the students themselves on marine pollution and loss of biodiversity, urbanism (urban heat island effect), sustainable food consumption, carbon neutrality and carbon sequestration.

Eco Schools is an international program bringing together over 20 million students worldwide. The Virtual summit was held with the support of the Maltese Ministry of Education, Ministry for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning, Ambient Malta, HSBC Malta Foundation, Transport Malta, and Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Malta.
