The NASA Science Mission Directorate’s Core Data and Computing Services Program increases the return on NASA’s research investments by streamlining and enabling access to scientific data, computing, and information management resources.

							01Maximizing the utility of NASA’s scientific informationWe enable researchers, businesses, and the general public to access and use the vast amount of data and information produced by NASA’s cutting-edge scientific investments.

							02Supporting fast, transparent scienceWe leverage recent advances in cloud technology that continuously enable greater speed, transparency, and collaboration in the scientific process.

							03Increasing efficiency through a cross-disciplinary approachWe work across the five Science Mission Directorate (SMD) divisions – Astrophysics, Biological and Physical Sciences, Earth Science, Heliophysics, and Planetary Science – to effectively coordinate the development and deployment of scientific infrastructure. This effort supports specialized data and computing systems and ensures taxpayers receive the maximum benefit from NASA’s scientific investments.

							04Leveraging industry expertise via public/private partnershipsOur program is pathfinding best practices around discovery, access, and use of high-value NASA science datasets with industry partners, such as our partnership with Amazon Web Services for the Open Data Registry Project.

							05Enabling AI-supported scientific discoveryWe support access to datasets that are suitable for training artificial intelligence (AI) models to further scientific advancements. 
Data and Computing Architecture Study
The Data and Computing Architecture Study was chartered in FY22 to determine whether a coordinated cloud and on-premises computing infrastructure could efficiently and effectively meet the data and computing needs of the Science Mission Directorate. The study's final report released in August 2024.
