Thorsten Markus
Cryospheric Science Program Manager
Thorsten Markus is the program manager for Cryospheric Science at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Previously, he was the chief of the Cryospheric Sciences Laboratory at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and the Project Scientist for the ICESat-2 mission.
At HQ, in addition to managing the Cryosphere Program, he is the Program Scientist for the ICESat-2, CRISTAL, NISAR, EDGE satellite missions, the Program Scientist for the Earth Venture Suborbital airborne effort Snow4Flow as well as the Program Scientist for the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). Furthermore, he led the competition for ESD’s new line of competed missions, the Earth System Explorers (ESE) program.
His technical expertise ranges from passive microwave remote sensing, lidar systems, radar systems, vis/IR data, as well as modeling. As a scientist, he has published in all those field and served on the Science Teams for several NASA and international satellite missions. His science included many field trips to the Arctic, Greenland, and Antarctica.
Furthermore, he is sought after polar and satellite expert and served on a wide range of national and international panels and committees.
