Approximately seventy students from Portland Public Schools' Summer School felt like scientists as they explored the ocean with staff from Gulf of Maine Research Institute and the NASA-funded Learning Ecosystems Northeast project. Each Thursday in July 2022, the students spent the morning exploring various aspects of the Gulf of Maine either in their classroom or at a nearby beach. Students participated in hands on activities led by GMRI scientists and educators to learn about tides, plankton and marine food chains, aquaculture and seaweed, and seining for species sampling. They were exposed to various types of scientific data and used scientific instruments like microscopes and seining nets. The students were enthusiastic, inquisitive, and demonstrated strong scientific observation skills.
The Learning Ecosystems Northeast project is supported by NASA under cooperative agreement award number NNX16AB94A and is part of NASA's Science Activation Portfolio. Learn more about Learning Ecosystems Northeast: https://www.learningecosystemsnortheast.org/
