Spring 2022 Tree Height and Land Cover Intensive Observation Period

Students, educators, and citizen scientists from over 1,000 locations in over 26 countries participated in the Spring 2022 Trees Around the GLOBE Student Research Campaign. During this Intensive Observation Period (IOP), which ran from Earth Day (April 22) to May 22 (International Biodiversity Day), participants contributed almost 3,000 observations of tree height and land cover. The Trees Around the GLOBE Student Research Campaign is a NASA Earth Science Education Collaborative (NESEC) initiative that collaborated with several NASA missions and subject matter experts to make connections to NASA science, including the NASA-USGS Landsat Program, with its 50 years of remote sensing Earth observations, as well as several NASA missions and instruments such as the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat-2) Mission, the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) Instrument, and the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Mission. Observations collected are part of the openly available GLOBE database and can be used for student research projects. The IOP was aligned to occur during other related events for cross-promotion, including the GLOBE European Phenology 2022 Spring Tree Campaign, the 25th anniversary of GLOBE Poland, the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Environment Programme, and the GLOBE Urban Heat Island IOP.
