Fire season in the U.S. West got off to a roaring start in the third week of June 2005. Fires triggered by “dry” lightning (lightning without rain) sprang up in several Western states and grew explosively in a matter of days. In this image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite, fires (outlined in red) are burning in California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. Among the largest are the Cave Creek Fire to the northeast of Phoenix, Arizona; the Good Springs Fire in Nevada, to the southwest of Las Vegas; and the Hackberry Fire in California.
