The Louisiana Superdome is now an island refuge for as many as 30,000 people, according to news reports. Many sheltered in the stadium while Hurricane Katrina raged overhead on Monday, August 29, 2005, and many more have been brought to the Superdome after being rescued from their flooded homes. The stadium itself was surrounded by flood water when the QuickBird satellite captured this detailed image on August 31. Much of the stadium’s bright white roof is missing, though the underlying roof structure appears to be intact. Interstate 10 runs along the lower edge of the image.
In the large version of the image, provided in the link above, the flooding stops just a few blocks away from the stadium. While safe from the floods, several downtown buildings show signs of wind damage.
