2017: Eclipse across America, from space (EPIC)

As the 2017 solar eclipse darkened the United States from West coast to East, NASA’s Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) on NOAA’s Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) captured the shadow of the moon moving across the country from a million miles away. DSCOVR’s primary mission is real-time solar wind monitoring for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), while EPIC maintains a constant view of the fully illuminated Earth as it rotates, providing scientific observations of ozone, vegetation, cloud height and aerosols in the atmosphere. DSCOVR is a partnership between NASA, NOAA and the U.S. Air Force. Daily images of Earth from EPIC are posted at https://epic.gsfc.nasa.gov/
