Abstract
The whitepaper "Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays: The Intersection of the Cosmic and Energy Frontiers" [Astroparticle Physics 149 (2023) 102819 — arXiv:2205.05845] was written for the Snowmass Cosmic Frontier CF7 with significant input by the community of ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) scientist. It outlines the state of the art and the science case of UHECR for both, particle and astrophysics at the highest energies. While it is critical to keep operating upgraded ground-based observatories for at least another decade, there also is a clear need for a next generation of UHECR observatories. At the highest energies, POEMMA, as a space-based mission, shall complement future ground-based air-shower arrays, such as GCOS and GRAND, making use of the large exposure achievable when observing cosmic-ray air showers from space.
