High Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) Splinter Session

Room: Queen's 6

We invite the high-energy community to a HEAD splinter session dedicated to the High Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) mission concept. The session will be held in the Queen’s 6 room on Sunday 26 March 2023 at 10:30a Hawaii Time (4:30p Eastern).

This session is open to the public and can be accessed remotely via Zoom.

There will be a series of talks describing the overall mission design and some of the most relevant science goals. In addition, a set of posters will be presented expanding on these topics. Talks include:

TopicSpeaker
HEX-P: Mission OverviewKristin Madsen

Line Emission Mapper (LEM) Splinter Session

Room: Queen's 6

We invite the community to attend the HEAD splinter session on the Line Emission Mapper (LEM) Probe mission concept. The talk session will be in the Queen’s 6 room on Sunday 26 March 2023 at 12 noon Hawaii Time (6p Eastern).

The session is open to the public and can also be accessed remotely via Zoom.

LEM will probe the physics of galaxy formation and the cosmic ecosystems with an imaging soft X-ray microcalorimeter (integral field unit) with a large field of view and grasp. LEM will perform deep pointed observations and an all-sky survey. This session will include the following talks:

TopicSpeaker
LEM OverviewRalph Kraft / Caroline Kilbourne
LEM InstrumentationSimon Bandler
Hot Galactic Halos and Intergalactic Medium in EmissionAnna Ogorzalek

STROBE-X Splinter Session

Room: Queen's 5

The HEAD splinter session titled "The future of X-ray timing" will serve as the session devoted to the STROBE-X mission concept. The session will be held in the Queen's 5 room on Sunday 26 March 2023 at 12 noon Hawaii Time (6p Eastern).

STROBE-X would be a powerhouse for understanding time domain and multi-messenger astronomy in the X-ray band, with a wide-field monitor giving instantaneous good sensitivity coverage to 1/3 of the sky, and two pointed instruments combining for a collecting area more than 10 times as large as any previous X-ray observatory. The session will include the following talks:

TopicSpeaker
Focus on the Instrument SuitePaul Ray
Overview of the Science CaseTom Maccarone
Equation of State of Neutron StarsAnna Watts
Strong Gravity Around Black HolesJack Steiner
Multi-Messenger AstronomyJamie Kennea

People interested in joining the STROBE-X science team should contact Tom Maccarone at thomas.maccarone@ttu.edu.

Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite Probe (AXIS) Splinter Session

Room: Queen's 6

We invite the high-energy community attending the HEAD 20 Meeting to join us at a splinter session dedicated to the Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite Probe (AXIS). The session will be held in the Queen’s 6 room on Sunday 26 March 2023 at 1:30p Hawaii Time (7:30p Eastern).

AXIS is a NASA Probe Mission Concept designed to be the next premier high angular resolution X-ray mission. AXIS will extend and enhance the science of high-angular resolution X-ray imaging and spectroscopy with ~10x more collecting area than Chandra, a large field of view (24' x 24'), and excellent spatial resolution (~1 resolution over a 15′ × 15′ field of view).

The session will feature a series of talks that will give an overview of AXIS, as well as the varied and exciting science that AXIS will probe, including:

TopicSpeaker
AXIS OverviewChris Reynolds; PI
MBH Growth and EvolutionAdi Foord
Transient ScienceMark Reynolds
Galaxy Evolution and FeedbackAnthony Flores
Stars and ExoplanetsRodolfo Montez
Compact Objects and SNRHui Yang and Noel Klingler
The AXIS High-Speed X-ray CameraEric Miller
Community Involvement and Simulation ToolsAndy Ptak

This session is open to the public and will also be posted on the AXIS YouTube channel. We look forward to seeing you there!

The APEX X-ray Probes Session

Room: Monarchy Ballroom

The Astrophysics Probe Explorer (APEX) announcement of opportunity (AO) is expected to be released in the late summer of 2023. The cost cap for an APEX mission is $1000M, and it will be the first such AO for this class of mission. The AO calls for either a FIR or X-ray observatory, and in this session each of the X-ray probes currently being developed will present their concepts. As these probes will be the first of their kind, it is timely to discuss how they may differ from Small and Medium Explorers, and a Flagship class in their guest observer access, and have a discussion about what role the community would like to see the probes take.

The APEX X-ray Probes special session will be held in the Monarchy Ballroom on Wednesday 29 March 2023 at 5p Hawaii Time (11p Eastern). The session will include the following talks:

TopicSpeaker
Line Emission Mapper (LEM)Ralph Kraft
The Advanced Imaging X-ray Satellite (AXIS)Chris Reynolds
The High-Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P)Daniel Stern, Kristin Madsen, Javier Garcia
Arcus Probe: Exploring Multi-scale Structure Formation and Evolution in the UniverseLaura Brenneman
Spectroscopic Time-Resolving Observatory for Broadband X-rays (STROBE-X)Paul Ray
