James Webb Space Telescope Cycle 5 Call for Proposals

Proposals due 15 October 2025

We are pleased to announce the Cycle 5 Call for Proposals for James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) General Observer (GO), Survey, and Archival Research (AR) programs.

JWST Helpdesk about James Webb Space Telescope Cycle 5 Call for Proposals
Gaseous yellow-orange filaments look like a rose seen from the side and tilted slightly from upper left to lower right, slightly higher than the center of the frame. Extending from the rose to upper left and lower right are gaseous outflows that appear as red lobes that have an overall shape of tall, narrow triangles with rounded tips. Each red triangle is made up of wavy, irregular lines. Dozens of stars are scattered across the field. One particularly bright white star with eight diffraction spikes is located at the top of the yellow rose. Another bright blue star with even more prominent diffraction spikes is to its lower left. The background of space is black.
Webb’s image of the enormous stellar jet in Sh2-284 provides evidence that protostellar jets scale with the mass of their parent stars—the more massive the stellar engine driving the plasma, the larger the resulting jet.

We anticipate allocating up to 8,000 hours in Cycle 5, divided proportionately among Very Small, Small, Medium, and Large/Treasury programs, depending on proposal pressure. We invite scientists to participate in this opportunity, which is open to all categories of organizations, both domestic and foreign, including educational institutions, profit and nonprofit organizations, NASA Centers, and other Government agencies.

Proposals are due on 15 October 2025, by 8p Eastern (5p Pacific).

The version of the Astronomer's Proposal Tools (APT) required for proposal submission is 2025.5 or higher. This version will be delivered around 21 August 2025. We encourage prospective investigators to start preparing their proposals as soon as possible.

The Cycle 5 Telescope Allocation Committee will meet in the first two weeks of February 2026, with selections announced in March 2026.

For details, please consult the full Call for Proposals, including the JWST New and Important Features page. Questions may be submitted to the JWST Help Desk.
