Exploring Cosmic Ecosystems with Next-Generation X-ray Missions

Speaker

John ZuHone, Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian

Abstract

Galaxies are the nodes connecting the various processes driving the evolution of cosmic ecosystems. Within them, stellar winds, supernovae, and supermassive black holes spread momentum, energy, and metals into the interstellar, circumgalactic, and intergalactic media. Conversely, gas flows from the broader cosmic web back into galaxies. A significant fraction of the baryons involved in all of these processes are in the hot phase, and thus their thermodynamic, kinematic, and chemical properties are most readily accessible via observations in the X-ray band. In this presentation, I will describe how a next-generation X-ray observatory can probe these processes at a range of scales, and what capabilities are required to make the relevant measurements.

This cropped horizontal image has layers of semi-opaque rusty red colored gas and dust that starts at the bottom right and goes toward the top left. There are three prominent pillars rising toward the top left. The left pillar is the largest and widest. The peaks of the second and third pillars are set off in darker shades of brown and have red outlines.
