Fires, probably related to land clearing or agriculture, were burning across a broad area of Argentina and Paraguay on July 16, 2008, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite passed overhead and captured this image. Places where the sensor detected active fires are outlined in red. The wind was blowing from the north, spreading long plumes of smoke as well as dust from the shoreline of the large lake at image left. Fires are especially smoky in the floodplain of the Paraná River north of Bueno Aires.
The high-resolution image provided above is at MODIS’ maximum spatial resolution (level of detail) of 250 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response Team provides the image in additional resolutions.
