Smoke from scores of fires (marked in red) hangs over western Russia on the eastern side of the Ural Mountains, which run north-south through this scene. Dozens of additional fires are visible to the west of the mountains. The Volga River runs down the left half of the image. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite captured this image on October 4, 2003.
