This May 11, 2003, Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) view of North America shows that much of the country’s weather was dominated by a low-pressure system centered near Lake Michigan. The system appears to have entrained smoke from the intense burning across Central America, spreading the smoke over the Gulf Coast states and pushing it out over the northern Caribbean. The grayish haze just left of the bottomcenter of this true-color image is smoke from the firesburning in Central America.
