Tropical Storm Chanthu headed for China on July 21, 2010, having strengthened from a tropical depression. In the wake of already severe flooding in southern China and Tropical Storm Conson, Chanthu promised to bring more moisture to the region. On July 22, 2010, Chanthu strengthened to a typhoon before weakening back to a tropical storm and then a depression.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this natural-color image of Chanthu on July 21, 2010. The heart of the storm lies east-southeast of the island of Hainan. Spiral arms brush past the coast of mainland China, including Hong Kong.
