One of Jupiter's moons transits it and casts a shadow on Jupiter's atmosphere. The compilation of images as the comet approaches the planet from the bottom of the image forms a "trail".

Jupiter and Shoemaker-Levy 9

This is a composite photo, assembled from separate images of Jupiter and comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, as imaged by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope in 1994.
