Hundreds of galaxies in a diverse array of shapes and colors are scattered across the dark background of space. Bright stars are visible near the center and in the bottom-right. A large blue-white spiral galaxy can be seen at the top on the right side.

MACS J0717 Parallel Field (Frontier Fields)

A swirling spiral galaxy and bright foreground star (center) dominate a deep field of galaxies in this image of a piece of sky near galaxy cluster MACS J0717.5+3745 (not shown.) This parallel field was captured as part of Hubble's Frontier Fields project, which used the combined power of natural "gravitational lenses" caused by massive galaxy clusters and Hubble's ability to create long-exposure deep field images to see galaxies that would normally be far beyond the reach of telescopes.
