Looking into the disk of a galaxy, we see a glowing white center and billions of stars, with streaks of reddish-brown gas and dust. All against the black backdrop of space.

NGC 3501

This spiral galaxy, NGC 3501, faces Earth edge-on. It is one half of a pair with another spiral galaxy, NGC 3507 (not shown here), which appears face-on from our perspective. Together, these two galaxies move through space together and keep each other company.
