NASA Awards Early Career Scientists Honing their Science Communication Skills

In December 2022, the NASA Science Mission Directorate Community of Practice for Education (NASA SCoPE), led by Arizona State University (ASU), awarded its first ever American Geophysical Union (AGU) Science Activation (SciAct) Affiliate class for the 2022 AGU Fall Meeting. This inaugural group consists of 10 early career scientists interested in honing their science communications skills and learning more about NASA Science Activation as a whole.

Affiliates received six hours of communication training from the AGU Sharing Science Committee and NASA SciAct, a travel grant to the AGU Fall Meeting held December 12-16 in Chicago, Illinois, opportunities to share their science via flash talks in the ASU/NASA SCoPE booth, and a mixer invitation featuring NASA Planetary Division Lead, Lori Glaze, and NASA SciAct teams. This collection of events provided concrete examples for these early career scientists on sharing science with the general public and introduced the affiliates to individual NASA Science Activation teams to build connections with the educational outreach experts working to share NASA science like theirs with the general public.

The AGU SciAct Affiliate program is designed to broaden participation and NASA representation in the educational outreach efforts of NASA’s Science Activation teams. Affiliates were competitively selected based on their connections to NASA-sponsored research and those from historically marginalized communities were highly encouraged to apply. Applications will reopen in late summer, 2023.
