In October, 2023, two project teams from NASA's Science Activation program, the NASA Earth Science Education Collaborative (NESEC) and the Engaging Hispanic Communities project, collaborated with the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, NC to bring 15 Hispanic families new to the U.S. to the NASA Langley Open House on October 21st.
These families were able to meet with Hispanic employees from across the Center, Deputy Center Director Lisa Ziehmann, and nine Hispanic NASA Subject Matter Experts. Hispanic Employee Advisory Committee (HEAC) member, Marilé Colón Robles (Science Directorate) also gave the families a VIP tour of the Center. This impactful collaboration also included NASA Langley’s Global Learning & Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program, the HEAC, and the Museum of Life and Science's partners, El Futuro and El Centro Hispano. The museum and private donors paid all expenses for these families to be a part of the Open House.
The NASA Earth Science Education Collaborative (NESEC) and the Engaging Hispanic Communities projects are supported by NASA under cooperative agreement award numbers NNX16AE28A (NESEC) and 80NSSC22M0122 (Engaging Hispanic Communities) and are part of NASA’s Science Activation Portfolio.
One of the most interesting things is to see that the children can dream and that it is not a limiting factor, that they as Hispanic, they can also be there one day. To see so many Hispanic in NASA, it not only makes us feel proud, but is a source of inspiration that they too can one day achieve their own dreams.
