Description
This image, taken by NASA's Dawn spacecraft, shows the surface of dwarf planet Ceres from an altitude of 915 miles (1,470 kilometers) around mid-latitudes. The image was taken on Sept. 28, 2015, and has a resolution of 450 feet (140 meters) per pixel.
The unusual mountain Ahuna Mons is featured in this image, named for the traditional post-harvest festival of the Sumi tribe of Nagaland, India. It is 4 miles (6 kilometers) tall and 12 miles (20 kilometers) in diameter.
Dawn's mission is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Dawn is a project of the directorate's Discovery Program, managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. UCLA is responsible for overall Dawn mission science. Orbital ATK, Inc., in Dulles, Virginia, designed and built the spacecraft.
