NASA Astrobiology

Engaging learners of all ages in examining the origins of life and evolution on Earth and searching for life in the Universe.

This image collage includes various elements related to astrobiology and space exploration. It features large satellite dishes used for communication or observation, the planet Mars, a comic-style illustration of a Mars rover exploring the planet with DNA strands, two young girls using a microscope in a scientific experiment, the icy surface of Europa, a Martian crater, and purple-colored biological filaments resembling microscopic organisms. The imagery emphasizes scientific inquiry, space exploration, planetary science, and the search for life beyond Earth.

Team Mission

Astrobiology research at NASA encompasses the study of the origins and evolution of life on Earth, and the search for life in our Solar System and beyond.

Astrobiology is highly interdisciplinary and captivates the public’s imagination through its engaging and exciting narrative, “Are we alone in the Universe? How did life begin?”

Everyone is an astrobiologist; they just don't know it yet.

NASA SENIOR SCIENTIST FOR ASTROBIOLOGY, 2008-2023

The NASA Astrobiology Program is dedicated to fostering a community of researchers who value conveying their work accurately and impactfully not only to their research peers, but also to stakeholders, the public, the media, and to diverse learners. In doing so, we aim to serve broad societal needs such as supporting STEM literacy among the public and improving STEM education in the classroom.

One of my mentors at NASA used to say, ‘science isn’t done until it’s shared.’ And we know that you as the astrobiology community hold that value deep within your hearts. We want to continue to support you to do that as the Astrobiology Program.

EDUCATION AND COMMUNICATIONS LEAD, NASA ASTROBIOLOGY PROGRAM

The NASA Astrobiology Program serves Science Activation as an infrastructure group by being a source of astrobiology educational materials and other resources for educators. The Program’s Astrobiology Science Communication Guild initiative is a collective of astrobiology subject matter experts, and we connect its members to SciAct’s diverse outreach, communication, education, and public engagement opportunities through mutually beneficial collaborations.
