Cassini Significant Event Report

For Week Ending 08/27/99

Spacecraft Status:

The most recent spacecraft status is from the DSN tracking pass on
Thursday, 08/26, over the Goldstone tracking station. The Cassini
spacecraft is in an excellent state of health and is operating normally. The speed of the spacecraft can be viewed on the "Where is Cassini Now?" web page (http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/operations/present-position.cfm)

On Friday, 08/20, the post Earth science sequence was uplinked to start
executing at 1999-237T06:30:00 UTC. CDA was successfully turned ON and
reconfigured for nominal dust monitoring configuration.

On Tuesday, 08/24, the post Earth science sequence began execution, CDA
flight software was updated, the CAPS instrument was powered off, a
"tripped" Solid State Power Switch (SSPS) state in SSR-A was cleared, and
the Earth Science sequence completed.

On Thursday, 08/26, Earth Magnetotail Observations continued. This
activity extends through C16 as the instruments collect data as Cassini
passes alongside and through the Magnetotail.

Upcoming events for the period of 08/27 - 09/02 include:

CDA is placed in park on 08/29, UVIS, RPWS, MAG and MIMI are placed in
"sleep" mode in preparation for TCM-13, uplink and start of execution of
the TCM-13 sequence is on 08/30, TCM-13 is completed and UVIS, RPWS, MAG
and MIMI are recovered from sleep back to their basic monitoring mode on
08/31, and CDA is placed into normal Dust Monitoring Configuration and
C16 is uplinked to the spacecraft on 09/02.

Cassini will begin orbiting Saturn on July 1, 2004, and release its piggybacked Huygens probe about six months later for descent through the thick atmosphere of the moon Titan. Cassini-Huygens is a cooperative mission of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the mission for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, D.C.
