Cassini Significant Event Report

For Week Ending 09/17/99


Spacecraft Status:


The most recent spacecraft status is from the DSN tracking pass on
Thursday, 09/16, over the Goldstone tracking station. The Cassini
spacecraft is in an excellent state of health and is operating normally. The speed of the spacecraft can be viewed on the "Where is Cassini Now?" web page (http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/operations/present-position.cfm)


On Saturday, 09/11, the High Gain Antenna Earth point maneuver executed
nominally with a 180 degree roll and 2 degree turn to Earthpoint.


On Sunday, 09/12, the CAPS High Voltage power-on executed successfully.


On Monday, 09/13, CDA Flight Software was loaded and checkout activities
performed.


On Tuesday, 09/14, CAPS, CDA, MAG, MIMI, RPWS, and UVIS were powered-off in
preparation for Probe checkout. Probe checkout and data playback executed
nominally and were followed by MAG and CDA power-ons.


On Wednesday, 09/15, the HGA Sunpoint Maneuver executed nominally, and the
spacecraft was switched to Low Gain Antenna 1.


Upcoming events for the period of 09/17 - 09/23:


BAIL and EGA portions of Periodic Engineering Maintenance on 09/17, and
MAG power-off on 09/19.

Cassini will begin orbiting Saturn on July 1, 2004, and release its piggybacked Huygens probe about six months later for descent through the thick atmosphere of the moon Titan. Cassini-Huygens is a cooperative mission of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the mission for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, D.C.
