On May 16, 2007, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite detected several active fire locations (outlined in red) in northern Florida and southern Georgia. The Bugaboo Fire straddles the state line, and it had burned more than 250,000 acres as of May 17. Hundreds of residences, mature timber (both on tree plantations and in state parks), and habitat for threatened and endangered species were threatened by the fire.
The large image provided above has a spatial resolution (level of detail) of 250 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response Team provides twice-daily images of the United States in additional resolutions.
