Several wildfires burned in Portugal in late August 2013. The largest was in the Caramulo Mountains of central Portugal, where five firefighters lost their lives on August 30. This image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite shows the Carmulo fire on August 29. The fires are outlined in red, and dense smoke was drifting west over the Atlantic Ocean. More than 31,000 hectares (77,000 acres) have burned in Portugal in 2013.
