Dozens of forest fires (marked with red dots) were burning in eastern Russia on August 17, 2002. Thick smoke blankets the Central Siberian Plateau near the Lena River and the city of Yakutsk in this true-color image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite.
